TEKTON Tap and Die Set, 39-Piece (Inch) | 7558

Gave this 5 stars because of Tekton's customer service. Would have been 4 stars otherwise. One of the taps broke almost immediately. I called customer service, only had to select 1 option before getting a real person, didn't have to wait on hold and he knew his stuff. He asked a couple questions, apologized for the inconvenience and shipped out a replacement. The whole thing took under 5 min and my new bit arrived 2 days later.This is a great option if you're like me and will only be using it a few times a year. This isn't the set to buy if you're going to be using it on a regular basis. The taps work fine, but because they aren't the strongest metal, you have to take it SLOW. Stronger bits can take a little more abuse, so you can tap faster. It's that simple.Picked this up to tap 8 holes that the skid plates on my truck mount to. Two of the holes had to be drilled out first (sheered the heads off 2 bolts) and the other 6 were just widened so all the new bolts would match. Widening the 6 was very quick. The 2 holes I had drilled out were slower because I was removing more material, but it worked fine.Overall, I'm very happy with the purchase and would buy Tekton again.

UPDATE 3/8 - AWESOME! Seller not only replaced the broken tap handle, they sent he a whole no set at no additional cost. Customer Service speaks or itself and for the price this tool works great/more or less guaranteed.I bought this set and had it same day delivered so I could re-tap my KLR650's motorcycle pegs in order to make a trip the next day. I got one of two holes re-tapped to M10X1.5 thread and things were going well when the double sided lever that you use to turn the taps flat our broke. It is made of cheap pot mettle. I am not saying this set isn't worth $39 dollars or that it won't get you out of a pinch. But this is not your grandfather's forged set of taps and dies that will last 100 years either. Buyer be clear on your requirement and be very gently with the brittle metal.

I needed a tap and die for a single project (replacing a broken bolt on my Harley.) The kit worked as expected taping a new threaded hole into the boss.Of course the set is inexpensive and the fitting, especially where the tap connects to the tool, is weak. It is fine for occasional work but no where near high quality tool standards. However, the taps are solid and I did not have a tap break off or even dull with a single use. I was also able to run through a few threads cleaning them out and clean up the threads on some bolts.

Five stars for the value. The quality is far from that but 5 stars quality will cost you more than $100 for this kind of set.I used some of the dies on mild steel (nail quality steel) so far. No problems with that application. I did noticed a decrease of performance after doing a bunch of threads but the dies still cut a clean thread. Is only that I need to use more force to turn it than when it was new (yes, always using cutting oil and breaking). The customer support looks to be good (although I did not have to call in) and I hope that if they becomes dull the lifetime warranty will cover it so.These are all round dies not hex.The plastic case is not high quality either as the dies are kind of lose in it. They arrived free inside the case but no observed nicks or damage to the cutting surfaces. Again it is good enough to keep the stuff together in the garage as I'm not going to travel with them.

I have bougut lots of tekton tools as an alternative to paying more on tool truck. Almost always been satisfied with qualities of wrenches, sockets, scewdrivers, etc... So when was these I got them. First week used 3 times and work great! Second week needed to chase a lug stud thread and found out my metric set doesn't have the 12 / 1.25 die I needed! Instead my metric set has a SAE 1/8TH OR some rain thing in its spot. Guess I should have checked kit out with magnifier and made sure before used in crunch with customer waiting. Had to just buy a new stud and install but took your longer than it I had the right die.

I've had this for 7 years now and still use it regularly. The metal is not great quality, but when a piece strips out or fails, I just go to the hardware store and replace it. I've probably replaced only 4 pieces in the time that I've owned it. I think it was well worth the money.

This kit contains better taps than the HF sets. I originally received poor design handles with this kit but company has redesigned them. One handle came apart and wouldn't stay tight. !!!UPDATE!!! A TEKTON customer service rep has contacted me after reading my review and has offered to send me new design handles. Good customer service.Update 6/23/2014 I received the new handles today and they are much better. With the new handles, I would recommend this product.

So I've been thinking of getting a tap and die set for a while but always just kindof worked around not having one. I started working on a project that I probably could have just bought one or two but decided I wanted to get a set so I'd have it for any future uses.Since I don't use it professionally, just the occasional hobby use, I didn't want to spend a fortune on them. These seem to fit the bill. The case isn't the greatest and some of the taps were loose after falling out of their holders during shipping but nothing was damaged. I plan on leaving it on a shelf and pulling it out when needed so not a big deal for me.I've only used a couple of them and it was used in plastic so I can't really comment on the durability just yet but it seems like it would work nicely.

Well packaged and functions as required with strong tools in well organized box.

Seem to be made of poor quality material 2 taps broke on first use. No contact from seller. Would not recomend.

Not high enough quality for use at my shop, but as a backup kit at home this kit is great value. Case is really cheap though and I sometimes end up with bits everywhere if the latches pop open while carrying. If case would latch better and tighter would give it 5*
