Not something you would not know if you travelled with friends before
The liking of this book depends very much on how old are you and which is your experience in travelling. I am 35 and I visited so far 30 countries together with my friends but less than 3 alone. I found some interesting tips like going to places where they have common tables when eating because you increase your chances of being sociable but also some less safe advices in my case like go for a coffee before a hike and make friends there and go with them in the forest. I would never do that especially if I would be the only woman in the group. So if you never left your country or city this book has very valuable tips. For more experienced travellers it had little to add.

Worth the Price
I've just perused the book - safety, common sense, etc. I'm traveling solo to Buenos Aires next year and wanted some insight from a seasoned solo traveler. Since I've traveled many places, mostly getting there by myself then meeting someone, it didn't offer a whole lot of new information. What I like about it was the information all in one source - instead of my head, it's written for an easy read and reference. It's like tangible reassurance and reminding. Worth the price.

Full of ideas and resources for the solo traveller. A must read!
I really enjoyed this book as it gave me many ideas and resources for traveling solo. I believe a lot of the information could apply to any traveler not just those traveling alone. However, it is great to have such an informative resource for those of us who do travel by ourselves. I also am part of Janice Waugh's Facebook community for solo travel and have taken three solo trips in the past 13 months because of the confidence the books and site have provided me. I am so thankful I found these resources. If you are interested in traveling alone but don't know where to start this book is a must read.

This is a great travel resource
This is a great travel resource, not only for solo travelers but also for anyone who is a little hesitant about foreign travel. Women seem more hesitant to step out into the unknown without a travel companion. Men, on the other hand, blithely pack a bag and head out to the unknown. This book is filled with just about anything a solo traveler could be met with - arriving in the dead of night in a strange town and trying to find your hotel, for instance. And it's a real pleasure to read about Janice's adventures, the friends she made along the way, and so much more.

Very Helpful and right on time
I was enlightened and encouraged by the instructions and stories in this book. I am alone now and would like to keep traveling but there are so many times when I will have to go alone. This book was very helpful for me to start doing just that in safety and with more peace of mind. Thanks to the author and all who contributed to it.

Good General Advice on a wide variety of topics
The author gives good general advice on a wide variety of topics. But some of the advice is obvious, and the book is aimed at a wide audience. --Men shouldn't carry their wallet in their back pocket, if you go to a club be aware of where the nearest exits are, Women should consider having birth control with them if they might have sex---So you will not find specific travel ideas--locations, how to get deals, resort reviews...I hesitate to give the book less than four stars because the book it a public service. It's inspirational to those who find themselves alone and might not have traveled in a long time. As such it offers a great service and gives people stuff to consider and gives a lot of important pointers to those people. Other people who get out more might not find the book super helpful.

Friendly and inspiring
The Solo Traveler's Handbook approaches its reader with a friendly and inspiring attitude - after finishing, I am filled with inspiration to travel soon, (by) myself! In that sense, I think it brings something to everyone who has that inner wanderlust. In general, however, I would say it's a book which mainly benefits those who are not already accustomed to travelling, whether by themselves or otherwise - although there were certainly some tips I think semi-experienced solo travelers can learn from as well.

Interesting
I purchased this book as a recommendation from another solo traveler. I guess I was hoping for a bit more or maybe I just knew or was familiar with some of the suggestions. This maybe more helpful for the truly novice traveler either solo or not. I think the resources she provides will be helpful in the future for solo travelling.

Pros and cons
I travel a lot on my own and I’ve never known how to explain how this works for me. This book puts into words the joys of exploring and connecting and the reality checks because not everyone thinks or acts like you want them to. The best solo travel book I’ve read.

Very good
I was going on my first ever holiday, and also went solo. I'm a young female (24 years old) and was a bit nervous and unsure of how to proceed. This book helped to settle my nerves due to her down-to-Earth writing. The author helps the reader to understand the dangers of travelling alone as well as the pro's, I found this particuarly helpful and managed to put some to good use on my holiday. I found very helpful the section on making friends while you're abroad, but being cautious while you do it. I'd recommend this to any first time traveller or to any women going on a solo journey.

Some of this may be obvious to some (or even many) but it is good that Waugh has covered it all to make sure ...
This is a very handy guide for how to start traveling solo, with hints and tips for every level of traveler apart from the most experienced, pulling together the author's own experiences with those from others that she has picked up along the way and through her blog. Some of this may be obvious to some (or even many) but it is good that Waugh has covered it all to make sure those that are completely new to any kind of travel know how best to get started. It is a relatively short book but as a starting point it is very handy and does have a very useful resource list at the back (and of course her blog has even more information).
