Q: Ok, what are the 2 knobs on each side for?

They are just for looks. Will say this is a great holder if you have a fj. Very happy with it. Snap right in place do damage to dash.

Q: How does this stay attached? Does it just sit on the dash. It feels very unstable.

Oh it snaps on perfect and looks like it’s apart of the car, two problems I had was that you can’t see the clock, so if you’re used to looking at that it’s kind of annoying you can’t see it because that’s right where your phone will be but I have adapted if you just push up on the bracket you can look under the phone and peek if necessary or check on your phone Lastly, I had to remove the little bumper guards out of the part that holds the phone because it won’t fit a phone with a case. However, this works perfectly fine and fits great. If I had a choice, I would definitely buy it again just because it fits so nicely and it’s easy to view location.
