Amazing
Even though I already knew how it would end, Wing has a way of making you care for the characters and hope for a different ending than what you know is coming.

Early contender for favorite of the year
The story begins with a description of Icarus trying to catch octopuses. It's effective in a couple of ways. Firstly, who the hell knew trying to get some of the tentacled buggers could be so gripping? (Seriously, I'd happily take a book on this alone). Secondly, and more importantly, it helps us come to know the depth of our title character's cleverness and determination. This is where Wing shines. His characters are not the flat folk of myth. They breathe, fume, speak, and wobble in three dimensions, particularly in the case of Daedalus. I hated Ik's father upon meeting him but brimmed with empathy when I had to say goodbye. There is no more enjoyable experience than having to reckon with and reevaluate my feelings for a character. You don't need to know the myth to enjoy this book. If you know it well (this is the sort of thing I nerded out about hard when I was Ik's age), you'll be comfortable, too. It's early goings for 2020, but I know this will stay one of my favorites of the year. Ik's final thought has been ringing in my head and chest for weeks.

A truly well-written retelling of the classical story!
I love ancient Greece and this was a great retelling of the classical story of Icarus! I am one of those people who cry (a lot!) when sad things happen to characters I care about and since we all know how the classical story of Icarus ends, I tried my very best to not get so attached to Ik (Icarus) in this novel. But it was impossible! Wing has managed to create such a real character - real person - that I became very attached to Ik despite my best efforts to not get so emotionally attached. And despite knowing how it would end, I still found myself desperately hoping that maybe, just maybe, the Fates would have a different ending in store for him this time. And it’s not just Ik: all characters are well-written with interesting layers. My feelings about Ik’s father, Daedalus, ranged from “he seems like a mean father” to “oh, he would truly sacrifice everything for his son” to “I feel so bad for him” to “wow that’s an impressive mind he’s got there.” And that is the definition of intriguing characters! I highly recommend this book, it’s a truly well-written retelling of the classical story of Icarus!
