Ascent of (wo)man: I'm an Upright Biped again!
TL;DR?When choosing a mattress topper -- what problem are you trying to solve?-- If you need more support and are larger -- choose Firm Latex to support your back-- If you have a firm mattress and need some give -- choose a memory foam topper or soft Latex.-- If you need support for your back and hips but cushion for your shoulder -- you'll have to get creative and put a memory topper for your shoulder and head on top of the memory topper you have for the whole bed... and then you can pretend you are the Princess from Princess and the Pea-----------------------------------------------------------------------When I started having a lot of problems getting out of bed and taking 5 minutes just to be able to stand up straight (felt like I was re-enacting the series of "Ascent of Man" drawings) and I developed shoulder pain from sleeping on my side, I decided I needed a new mattress -- my old one was nearly 10 years old.I bit the bullet and went for a Casper Hybrid. However, because I am heavier than the standard 230-pound person (considered a "large person" for the mattress industry), I knew I needed a mattress topper.I started out with a 3-inch Serta Memory foam topper... on the plus side, my shoulder quit hurting. However, my back got even worse.I did a lot of research online about toppers recommended for heavier people and this one kept getting recommended. I went for the 3" Firm. Almost immediately my back pain went away. I can not believe that I'm able to get out of bed and stand up straight immediately without having to spend 5 minutes in pain and crouched over. I haven't been able to do that in years! The only downside to this mattress topper is that my shoulder has started to ache again due to the firmness. So my search for the optimal sleep surface has amounted to "what do I want to hurt less!".What I wound up doing is taking the top 18-20 inches of my memory foam topper and actually placing that on top of the Latex topper to provide cushioning for my shoulder... that leaves the bottom half to support my back and hips... I feel like "Princess and the Pea" with all the layers but it works! The upshot -- think about what problem you are trying to solve when you buy a memory topper. If you have a firm mattress and you want more "give", then memory form is probably a good option. However, if you want to balance out a mattress that is too soft, then Latex is going to be your best bet. And, if you are like me where you need more support in the torso and more cushion in the shoulder/neck -- well, you'll probably have to get creative and do a combination of both.A note about this seller -- terrific company that really stands behind their products. Very fast delivery. Excellent life-saving product![LCAR]

Replaced Memory Foam
I became increasingly aware that the 3” memory foam pad on our Sleep Number queen bed was interfering with my comfort and my sleep. I tried all sorts of sleep aids with not much relief. I went to the Sleep Number store and asked if I could buy a different replacement pad-but they said they really didn’t offer anything else (at least at that time-several years ago). My brother had touted the excellent night’s sleep he was getting on an ancient latex mattress when he stayed with an elderly uncle. I shopped around for different toppers and finally settled on this one. The 3” mattress zipped right into the zippered slot without need to trim or adjust, after removing the memory foam. I am sensitive to smells, (memory foam-yuck) and had feared this mattress would smell awful-like latex gloves. But I read all the reviews (most said little or no scent) and ordered the 3” firm. No discernible smell-although I did let it air out on a floor after unpacking it. I will say it was a bit firmer than I expected-but since we have a Sleep Number, I just took the firmness down on that. Perfect! Best sleep aid I’ve ever used! Love that this company is environmentally friendly too.

Fixed my dipping mattress and sore back problem
Update June 2024: still a happy sleeper 3 years into using this latex mattress topper!!Update June 2023: I'm still very happy with this mattress topper. No dips, still comfortable, flipped it once. I see no reason to buy a new mattress.I replaced my 10 year old mattress in January 2019 with the same model. Sadly, quality had declined and after 2 1/2 years it was dipping and giving me a sore back. I started looking at new mattresses but balked at the cost, especially since spending money so recently on a new mattress. Then I started looking at mattress toppers and finally settled on a 3" firm latex mattress topper in early June 2021. I tried it on top of the mattress and it helped but it didn't do quite enough to eliminate the dip or my sore back. So I got a 4'x2' quarter inch piece of plywood and put it between the topper and mattress. That has really helped and 5 months later I can't remember the last time I woke up with a sore back. I'm hoping this will delay a new mattress purchase for a few more years. The only drawback is that it made my mattress pretty high, but if I really needed to fix that I would get a low profile foundation. So far, it hasn't been a problem.MARCH, 2022--it's been 10 months since I bought this 3" topper and I'm still sleeping well. No backache, not so firm that it hurts my hips. Definitely worth it, and I don't anticipate needing to replace with a new mattress anytime soon.
